Terms of Service

Hiroi (間) — a real-time meeting translation and language-learning app for iOS.

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Hiroi app and its related backend services (the "Service"), provided by Hon Wing Yuen, an individual developer ("we," "us," "Hiroi"). By downloading, signing in to, or using Hiroi, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old (or 13 where local law permits, with consent where required) to use Hiroi.

2. Your account

Hiroi uses Sign in with Apple as the only sign-in method. You are responsible for maintaining access to your Apple ID and for activity under your account. We store an opaque Apple-provided identifier and, if you share it, your name; we do not store passwords. See our Privacy Policy.

3. The Service and how it works

• Your meeting audio is streamed directly from your device to our speech provider (Soniox, in the US) for transcription and translation. We do not record or store your audio.
• Transcripts, summaries, and saved phrases are stored on your device.
• When you request a summary or learning explanation, transcript text is sent to Google's Gemini API.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• use Hiroi for any unlawful purpose, or to record or transcribe others without any consent required by law in your jurisdiction;
• attempt to access, abuse, reverse-engineer, or overload the Service, its backend, or its providers;
• resell, share for a fee, or circumvent usage limits or our service-provider keys;
• upload content that infringes others' rights or violates applicable law.

Recording consent is your responsibility. Laws on recording and transcribing conversations vary by location. You are solely responsible for obtaining any consent legally required from meeting participants before using Hiroi.

5. Your content

You retain all rights to your meeting content, transcripts, and saved material ("Your Content"), stored on your device. We do not claim ownership. By using AI features, you authorize Hiroi to transmit the relevant transcript text to our providers solely to deliver the feature you requested.

6. Usage limits and metering

We meter usage (minutes per month) tied to your account to manage capacity and plans. During beta, generous limits apply. If you reach a limit, meetings may not start until it resets or you upgrade.

7. Subscriptions and payments

Hiroi may offer paid, auto-renewable subscriptions in the future. In v1, Hiroi is free and no charges are made. If and when paid plans are introduced:

• Subscriptions are sold and billed through your Apple ID via the App Store; payment is charged at confirmation of purchase.
• Subscriptions renew automatically unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
• You manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple ID account settings. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
• Purchases are also governed by Apple's standard EULA and Apple Media Services Terms; where they conflict with these Terms regarding the purchase, Apple's terms control.

8. Third-party services

Hiroi relies on Apple, Soniox, Google, and Cloudflare to operate. Their terms and privacy policies apply to the data they process. We are not responsible for the acts or omissions of third-party providers, but we choose them carefully and limit what is shared, as described in the Privacy Policy.

9. Cancellation and account deletion

You may stop using Hiroi and delete your account any time via Settings → Delete Account, which erases your server-side usage data and stored name and wipes local data on that device. Deletion is permanent.

10. Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. We do not warrant that translations, transcriptions, or AI-generated content are accurate, complete, or fit for any purpose, or that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free — especially during beta.

11. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, HIROI AND ITS DEVELOPER WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR (B) USD 50.

12. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the developer from claims arising out of your misuse of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your failure to obtain any consent legally required for recording or transcribing others.

13. Changes

We may modify, suspend, or discontinue the Service or these Terms at any time. For material changes we will update the "Last updated" date and provide notice in the app where reasonable. Continued use after changes means you accept them.

14. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of [JURISDICTION], without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. The courts located in [JURISDICTION] will have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute, except where applicable consumer-protection law gives you the right to bring proceedings in your place of residence.
